Women's fencing competes against Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's fencing team hosted Bryn Mawr College and Swarthmore College Saturday afternoon at the Andy Kates Fencing Salle in the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.

The Fords rolled past each of their opponents, providing an excellent opportunity for Haverford's reserves and freshmen to gain experience.

In the first round, the Fords took on a much-improved Bryn Mawr squad. The Haverford epee
squad dropped tight matches to Bryn Mawr's Yiwa Lau but was still able to prevail, 5-4. Freshman walk-ons Julie Ta, in foil, and Elisabeth Hawthorne, in sabre, each were 2-1 against the Owls and 4-2 on the day.

Haverford continued its winning ways against Swarthmore in the second round as it marched past the Garnet, 24-3, enabling all the fencers to tally winning records on the day.

After finals and a shortened break, the Fords will return to competition on January 12, when they
travel to Penn State University. The Penn State Invitational will feature the host Nittany Lions, Temple, Duke, and other Division I heavyweights.
