MADISON, N.J. – A strong showing from the foilists led the Haverford College women's fencing team to an eighth place team finish at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championships over the weekend. Hanna Kopits earned NIWFA All-Star status at the championship to highlight three Fords who advanced to the direct elimination bouts.

After the Fords missed the 2019 NIWFA Championship due to inclement weather, Kopits earned second-team all-star status for the second time in as many attempts. She placed fifth overall, just missing a spot in the semifinals of the direct elimination bouts. Fellow foilist Golda Glasser also qualified to the direct elimination bouts and was credited with a 16th place finish. As a squad, Haverford's foil placed fifth overall.

Maia Carvalho represented Haverford's epee squad in the direct elimination bouts as she too placed 16th. Her individual success came after the Fords' epeeists secured an eighth place finish in the final squad standings. Adding to the epee award winners was Katie Bradley being named to the NIWFA All-Academic Team. Haverford's sabrists placed 10th overall as a weapon to solidify the team's eighth place showing.

Women's fencing will now head to North Carolina this coming weekend as the Fords take on the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional which will be held on Saturday, March 7 at Duke. Fencing at what is widely considered the toughest regional in the country will get underway at 9 a.m.

Maia Carvalho (epee) and Caroline Donado (sabre) are already in the regional field while Katie Bradley (epee), Golda Glasser (foil), and Sarah Blossom (foil) will all look to enter the regional championship from the group of alternates.
