Header from Newman lifts Fords past E'town

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Elizabeth Newman headed Allie Chen's corner kick into the top right of the goal to lift Haverford College's women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Walton Field. The winning goal came with 2:31 left in the game and completed a rally from a 1-0 deficit.

The Haverford (6-1) victory was the fourth one-goal win in a row, a streak which includes a pair of double-overtime wins. Elizabethtown (4-1-3) suffers its first defeat of the season after registering three one-goal victories and playing in four double-overtime games.

With time winding down in a 1-1 game, Chen lofted a ball from the left corner toward the back side of the goal box where Newman (pictured, right) was able to elevate highest of those in the air to head the ball under the crossbar and over leaping Blue Jay goalie Jess Manchak.

Elizabethtown picked up the game's initial goal as Laura Wingert raced to Kendra Mancino's thru ball and slotted a shot between Haverford goalie Robin Chernow and the left post. The marker, on one of only two first-half shots from the Blue Jays, gave the visitor's a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute of action.

That one-goal lead held until Haverford's Kristin Hasselgren netted her first of the year, converting a lofted ball off a Chen corner kick in the 66th to even the game at 1-1.

Manchak finished the game with six saves but gave up both goals on corner kick chances to take the loss between the pipes for E'town. Chernow earned the win making three saves for the Fords.

Haverford closes a two-game non-conference stretch with its next outing, a 4 p.m. match-up against visiting Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday at Walton Field.
