HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team put constant pressure in front of the St. John Fisher goal all afternoon, but was denied at every turn during a 1-0 defeat on the second day of the Haverford College Kick Off Classic. The Fords finished the game with a 23-7 advantage in shots and 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Nevertheless, they were unable to break the wall of St. John Fisher goalie Melissa McGowan as she made eight saves.

The Cardinals scored the game's lone goal as a long pass through the defense put Carli Kovarik in a 1v1 situation with the goalie which she converted for a 1-0 advantage. That lead would hold up despite heavy pressure from the Fords throughout the afternoon.

Katie Safter applied much of that offensive intensity as she recorded eight of the Fords' shots, putting half of those attempts on goal. In addition to all of the pressure on goal, Kendra Griesman also saw her shot find the crossbar during the 61st minute of play while a shot to follow up that rebound sailed over the crossbar just seconds later. Haverford held a 12-2 advantage in shots after the Cardinals took their 1-0 lead.

In addition to Safter, Griesman's take off the crossbar was one of her four shots during the afternoon while Saede Eifrig recorded five shots during the match. Leanne Ludwick and Sydney West each took two shots. In goal, Julie Hanss made a pair of saves as much of the action happened in front of the St. John Fisher goal.

In the first match to start the day, Montclair State won the Kick Off Classic Championship on penalty kicks against Arcadia. The Red Hawks and Knights played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of soccer before Montclair State came away with a 2-1 advantage in PKs.

Women's Soccer will be back at home next Saturday as the Fords host Lebanon Valley in a 3 p.m. start on Walton Field. That match will be proceeded by the men's home opener against Wesleyan at noon.
