HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team scored once during each half to record a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Scranton in the consolation game of the Haverford College Kick Off Classic. With a highly competitive field in the tournament once again, Arcadia took home the 2019 title following a 4-1 win over Montclair State earlier in the afternoon.

Leanne Ludwick's goal in the seventh minute of action got the Haverford offense on track. Jaclyn Corbin added what was an insurance goal at the time as her first collegiate goal put the Fords up 2-0. However, that tally ended up being the eventual game-winner as Scranton brought the game to within a single goal with four minutes left in regulation but could not find the equalizer in that remaining time.

Haverford's first goal came on its first shot attempt of the afternoon as Marina Piccolo found Ludwick on a cross into the six for the early advantage. Ludwick's goal was the first of the senior's final season and 10th of her career after scoring three times during each of her first three seasons. Her goal was set up by Piccolo's fourth assist of her career.

Corbin closed the scoring as she collected a pass from Saede Eifrig and finished from a tough angle to make the match a two-goal contest. That pass from Eifrig, which resulted in the 78th minute goal, was the fourth assist of the junior's career. Scranton scored off of a corner kick during the 87th minute of play, but could come no closer as the nationally-ranked Royals earned two more corner kicks in the final minutes but could just find a shot on either attempt at the corner.

Haverford finished the afternoon with an 11-7 advantage in shots, but was much more efficient than Scranton in the attacking third. Haverford put seven shots on target while Scranton put just two attempts on frame. Hannah Friedrich recorded the win in net behind a strong defensive line which thwarted nearly all of Scranton's offensive attacks throughout the afternoon.

With its first win of the 2019 season, women's soccer will head out on the road next Saturday for its first road trip this fall. Haverford returns to action on Saturday, September 7 at 4 p.m. against Lebanon Valley. These two teams have met every year since 2009 with the exception of a season ago when the game was cancelled. Four of those nine matches have gone into overtime while just one contest (a 2-0 Haverford win in 2016) has been decided by more than a single goal.
