Women’s Soccer Upended by Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's soccer team (4-5-1, 0-2 CC) suffered a road loss to Dickinson (7-3, 3-1 CC) in a Saturday afternoon Centennial Conference matchup on Phyllis Joan Miller Memorial Field. The Fords were bested 5-0.

Dickinson had the first vital chance of the game in the eighth minute, as Ava Prisco unleashed a swirling ball from outside the box on frame. Fords' keeper Theresa Haupt got a paw on it and pushed it up and off the crossbar, before pouncing on top of the ball to prevent any rebound.

Haverford's first chance came in the 19th minute, as Sarah Klink took advantage of a turnover along the back line. Klink moved in on an angle and played a low grounded shot that was saved by Dickinson's netminder Elizabeth Allen.

The 26th minute saw the game break open, as Dickinson scored first. A low and teasing cross was sent right in front of the net, causing congestion in the box. The ball was played out of the 18 for Katie Vassilakos, who hit home the one-timed shot to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.

With just about five minutes to go in the first half, Dickinson doubled their lead. Once again, it was another corner kick that gave the Fords some trouble. Dickinson's Emily Dunkel whipped in a corner kick, which found the head of Norah Heacock. Heacock powered home the header past Haupt to help the Red Devils go up by two.

Then exactly one minute later, Dickinson went up by three. A very similar play to goal number two, a cross and header beat Haverford once again. In the run of play, Allison Cudmore served in a beautiful cross which found a leaping Allie Charnas. Charnas unleashed a powerful header into the back of the net, to give the Red Devils a 3-0 lead before halftime.

The second half started much quieter between the two teams, with just two shots by Dickinson in the first 15 minutes.

However, in the 62nd minute the Red Devils increased their lead to four. The goal came from Prisco this time, as she picked up a back pass from Vassilakos, and blasted a ball from outside the box to the right of an extended Haupt into the back of the net.

About 20 minutes later, Dickinson found their fifth goal of the contest. A lofted ball into the box fell kindly to first-year midfielder Ava Burgess who juked a defender and fired one past Haupt to give the Red Devils a 5-0 lead.

The Fords look to bounce back Wednesday, October 4 as Muhlenberg rolls into town for the annual Play with Pride Game. Kick off is slated for 4 p.m. on Walton Field.
