Women's Squash Opens 2022-23 Campaign With 9-0 Sweep of Swarthmore

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's squash team competed in the annual lid-lifter against Swarthmore at the GIAC Squash Courts on Thursday evening, besting the Garnet by a 9-0 final score. The contest was an exhibition match that set the tone for the upcoming 2022-23 season with some strong performances from returners and excellent debuts from a pair of newcomers entering the lineup. 

At the top flight, Ariana Solecki got the better of Abraham Porschet (11-5, 11-3, 11-4) while Emi Krishnamurthy took a relatively straightforward sweep over Paris Shan (11-4, 11-0, 11-5). Catherine Fortin grabbed the win over Allison Shan at the third flight (11-4, 11-5, 11-3). Senior captain Caroline Smith breezed over Devyani Mahajan (11-0, 11-3, 11-3) and Lyvia Yan notched an impressive win allowing just six points to Leo Sun at the sixth position (11-2, 11-1, 11-3). 

A pair of debutantes made their first appearances for Haverford with sophomore transfer Amelia Stevens breezing past Owen Sears at the fifth flight (11-1, 11-6, 11-3) and first year Aman Hamdard allowing just two total points in her sweep of Ryunah Kang at the seventh flight (11-0, 11-0, 11-2). 

Swarthmore was forced to default the eighth and ninth slots in the lineup for the friendly, with the full lineup expected back for Friday's contest with the men's squad at the GIAC Courts (6 p.m.) 

Women's Squash now returns to action on Saturday, November 5 with the Alumnae Match slated for a 1 p.m. start on the GIAC Squash Courts. The regular season will begin in earnest on Friday, November 11, as Drexel visits the Haverford campus for a 5 p.m. first serve. The contest is part of the Pennsylvania Cup series.
