Women's tennis completes play at ITA Regional

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. - Senior Celia Tong and freshman Robyn Himelstein led a strong effort by members of the Haverford College women's tennis team on the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Tong and Himelstein rolled past Rachel Weinstein and Caroline Wood of Franklin & Marshall College by a score of 8-2 to capture the championship of the Blue 4 doubles bracket.

Sophomore Kristen Andersen also performed well throughout the weekend of competition. Jumping out to a one-set lead (6-1), Andersen shook off a loss in set two (4-6) to outlast Angela Stallman of Christopher Newport University, 10-6, in the tie breaker to advance to the finals of Blue 4 singles. Facing Alina Suyama of the Mary Washington in the championship, Andersen put up a fight but fell 7-5, 6-1 in the championship.

In other action on Sunday, sophomore Caitlin Gallagher lost to Elain Baik of Johns Hopkins University (6-0, 6-2) in the round of 16 of the singles championship draw.

Participating in consolation singles competition, Tong lost 8-4 to Brittany Wilson of Bridgewater College in Blue 1 singles.

Junior Alex Ferrara, who had advanced in the singles championship draw consolation bracket Saturday with an 8-4 victory over Natalie Savage of Salisbury University, lost 8-3 to Victoria Foanio of Albright College.

The ITA Regional concludes the fall portion of the Fords' schedule.
