Women's tennis begins spring trip with victory over Albion

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Haverford College women's tennis team took down Albion College, 6-3, in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.

Opening their spring break trip in successful fashion, the Fords (2-0) moved out to a 2-1 advantage after the doubles portion of the match. Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara battled past Irene Chen and Katie Blumberg, 8-5, to earn a point at No. 1 doubles and Robyn Himelstein and Rachal Torg came through at No. 2 by outlasting Marissa Cloutier and Heather Vogt, 9-7.

Abbey Flynn, playing at No. 6, helped Haverford, ranked 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Region, get off to a good start in singles with a straight-set victory over Leah Saurman (6-4, 6-4). Squelching thoughts of a Britons' rally, Ferrara also rolled to a convincing win (6-0, 6-4) at No. 2.

There was no quit in Albion (1-2), however, as Cloutier, the 19th-ranked player in the ITA Central Region, registered a 6-2 first set victory over Gallagher at No. 1 singles. Boasting her own high individual ranking, Gallagher, ranked 20th in the Atlantic South, roared back with decisive wins in sets two and three to account for the clinching point of the match.

Joining Gallagher and Ferrara as a winner in both singles and doubles on the day was Himelstein. The freshman, playing at No. 3, persevered to claim a 7-6 (7-4) victory in set one. Himelstein then quickly bounced back from a 6-2 setback in set two by powering to a 6-1 win in the deciding set.

Looking to continue their impressive early-season play, the Fords return to action on Thursday when they take on St. Lawrence University at 8 a.m. After the match-up against the Saints, ranked 15th in the Northeast, Haverford will cap a busy day with a contest against Wesleyan (Conn.) University at 2:30 p.m.
