Fords edged by St. Lawrence, 5-4

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Haverford College women's tennis team fell, 5-4, to St. Lawrence University in non-conference action on Thursday morning. Later in the day, the Fords suffered a 7-2 loss to Wesleyan (Conn.) University.

Haverford (2-2) got off to a great start in the match against St. Lawrence with an 8-3 win at third doubles by Celia Tong and Kristen Andersen. The top doubles pairing of Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara kept the positive momentum going with an 8-4 victory before the Saints came up with a win at No. 2 doubles.

St. Lawrence, ranked 15th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region, rallied back to claim the overall match lead with victories in the first two completed singles matches. Aiming to start a Haverford rally, Caitlin Gallagher, at No. 1, tied the score at 3-3 with a straight set victory (6-1, 6-0) over Elkie Vandenbeemt.

Playing at No. 2, Alex Ferrara was also victorious in singles action with a 6-3, 6-4 win but St. Lawrence (3-3) won the other two singles matches to claim the narrow victory.

Looking to bounce back with a win over Wesleyan in the afternoon, the Fords fell behind 3-0 after the doubles portion of the match.

Gallagher and Ferrara, playing at one and two, respectively, led the comeback effort with impressive wins in singles action. Gallagher outlasted Grace Smith in a three-set affair with a 6-3 victory in the deciding set and Ferrara registered her second sweep of the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Genevieve Aniello.

The Cardinals (2-5) held off the Haverford charge, however, and captured the non-conference win.

Closing out their time in Florida, the Fords take on the Belles of Saint Mary's College at 9 a.m. on Friday.
