BALTIMORE, Md. - The Haverford College women's tennis team suffered its first setback in the Centennial Conference this season on Sunday afternoon as the visiting Fords fell 7-2 to fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University.

Having won six consecutive matches, the Fords (8-3, 4-1 CC) eyed an upset against the defending conference champion Blue Jays (10-2, 5-0).

Showing the hosts they were in for a battle, the top doubles pairing of Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara earned an early point for Haverford with a 9-7 victory over Elaine Baik and Shannon Herndon. Gallagher and Ferrara's victory was no small feat as both Baik and Herndon are included, with different partners, in the current ranking of doubles teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Region.

Gallagher and Herndon, each boasting a regional ranking in singles play, engaged in a tightly-contested match at top flight singles. Herndon, ranked 13th, registered a 6-2 win in set one before Gallagher, ranked 19th, stormed back with a 6-2 victory of her own to tie the score. Gallagher went on to outlast Herndon in the third-set tiebreak (10-8) to remain undefeated (11-0) in singles action this spring and account for the Fords' final point of the day.

Haverford, the 12th-ranked team in the Atlantic South, returns to action on Tuesday at Muhlenberg College in the second of three consecutive road contests. The match against the Mules begins at 4 p.m.
