Women's tennis competes at ITA Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Six members of the Haverford College women's tennis team competed Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championship hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Senior Alex Ferrara and sophomore Robyn Himelstein had a strong day on the courts as they claimed two wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the championship doubles draw on Sunday. Ferrara and Himelstein rolled past Sara Finger and Nina Sanders of Muhlenberg College, 8-1, before taking down Roxy Alban and Natalie Savage of Salisbury University by the identical score.

Senior Kate Donches and freshman Abby Payson will compete on Sunday in the consolation bracket of the championship doubles draw after falling, 8-4, to Jackie Gaine and Jodi Noland of Christopher Newport University on Saturday.

After receiving a first-round bye, the duo of Jessica Liu and Marcela Niemczyk will compete in the second round of the Blue 3 doubles bracket on Sunday.

Ferrara was also impressive in singles action as she registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Salisbury's Alban in the first round of the championship singles draw. Ferrara then fell in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) to Sonja Meighan from Washington & Lee University in the round of 32.

Payson, Himelstein and Donches will compete on Sunday in the consolation bracket of the singles doubles draw.

Liu and Niemcyk will also play on Sunday in the consolation singles brackets of the Blue 2 draw and Blue 4 draw, respectively.

The ITA Regional continues tomorrow with play beginning at 8 a.m.
