Women's tennis takes down Christopher Newport

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team powered past visiting Christopher Newport University, 5-1, on Friday afternoon in non-conference action at the Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center inside Alumni Field House.

A sweep at doubles helped the Fords (5-2) make quick work of the Captains (5-8). Senior Kate Donches and sophomore Robyn Himelstein, playing at No. 2 doubles, accounted for Haverford's first point of the day with an 8-2 victory over Logan Eldridge and Jackie Gaine.

Freshmen Jessica Liu and Abby Payson gave the Fords a 2-0 lead in the contest with an 8-3 win over Kelsey Clark and Brook Byrd at No. 3 before the No. 1 pairing of Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara finished off the sweep with an 8-2 victory of their own.

Christopher Newport, ranked 13th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Region, looked to rally in singles but Haverford continued to overpower the Captains.

Robyn Himelstein, playing in the No. 3 spot, put the Fords on the brink of victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gaine.

Christopher Newport then managed a point at No. 4 singles before Gallagher finished off the contest with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory at top-flight singles.

Haverford's busy weekend continues on Saturday with a trip to McDaniel College for a Centennial Conference match beginning at 6 p.m.
