BALTIMORE - The Haverford College women's tennis team fell 5-0 to fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University in the Centennial Conference championship match on Sunday afternoon.

Making their first appearance in the conference title contest in program history, the third-seeded Fords (12-5) looked to pull off their second upset of the weekend but the tournament host Blue Jays (21-1) claimed their eighth consecutive conference crown.

Johns Hopkins pushed out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and then dashed Haverford's hopes for a rally with straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. The loss at No.2 by Alex Ferrara was the senior's first loss in her last 13 singles outings.

The Fords' No. 2 doubles team of senior Kate Donches and sophomore Robyn Himelstein came close to earning a point for Haverford on the day but the Blue Jays' tandem of Elaine Baik and Mikey Barthelmass hung on for an 8-5 victory.

The Fords, who entered the weekend ranked 14th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic South Region, advanced to Sunday's final by upending second-seeded Franklin & Marshall College, 5-3, in the Centennial semifinals.

The defeat brings an end to the careers of Ferrara, Donches, Abbey Flynn and Jordana Bloom.
