Women's Tennis Opens Centennial Matches with No. 1 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE – Playing in the rematch of its first appearance in the Centennial Conference Championship last spring, the Haverford College women's tennis team ran into a formidable foe in No. 1 Johns Hopkins. The Fords (7-2, 0-1 CC) came into the day riding a seven-match winning streak and took games in all nine matches, but were unable to come away with an individual victory.

The Fords best chance to win a match came at No. 3 singles. In that match, Abby Payson responded to an opening set loss with a hard-fought 6-4 second set win - forcing a 10-point tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Payson collected seven points, but was edged by a 10-7 final.

Starting off in doubles, the Fords' top two duos each took a pair of games as Caitlin Gallagher and Robyn Himelstein at No. 1, along with Alyssa Lavin and Kristen Andersen at No. 2, each fell 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Jessica Liu and Payson took one game at that spot.

In addition to Payson's success in singles, Gallagher and Himelstein each took three games in the top two positions. Gallagher claimed all three of her games in the first set of the No. 1 singles match. Himelstein took two games in the first set and one in the second during her match at No. 2 singles.

At the fourth through sixth singles slots, the Fords walked away with two games in each position. Liu and Lavin each took two games in their opening sets, playing No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Andersen claimed her two games in the second set of No. 6 singles.

Women's tennis will now begin a stretch of four straight home matches against Centennial Conference foes. During the upcoming week, Bryn Mawr will make the quick trip to campus on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. first serve. McDaniel will come to town Saturday for a scheduled 1 p.m. start.
