Women's Tennis Stopped in CC Semifinals by Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE – The Haverford College women's tennis team was taken down by top-seeded and nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in the Centennial Conference semifinals. The Blue Jays, ranked No. 9 in the NCAA during the latest ITA rankings release, claimed all three doubles points and the first two singles matches to finish play. The final score was 5-0 in a match played to decision.

Although the Blue Jays won all three doubles matches, the Fords made them work for their points. The toughest match of the doubles competition came as the Fords' No. 1 pairing of Caitlin Gallagher and Robyn Himelstein jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. However, Johns Hopkins' No. 1 doubles team stormed back to eventually tie the match at eight-all. In the tiebreak, the Blue Jays collected seven of the nine points to claim the win at No. 1.

In the No. 2 doubles match, Greta Koch and Jessica Liu and came away with three games against the Blue Jays' middle pairing. Johns Hopkins opened the day with an 8-0 win in the third doubles match.

In singles competition, Johns Hopkins took wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles to complete the match played to decision. The closest singles match of the afternoon came at No. 3 where Himelstein was locked in a 6-5 opening set before the match reached decision. Gallagher dropped a hard-fought 6-4 set to start and was locked at one-all in the second set before the matches were called in. Jia-Ling Tuan was locked in a four-all second set at No. 6 at that same time.

Women's tennis concludes the 2015 spring season with an overall record of 15-5. The Fords were recently ranked No. 12 in the ITA Atlantic South Region rankings. The 15 victories marked just the sixth time in program history that win total has been reached. That victory total also matched the highest mark since the 1999 season.
