Women's Tennis Holds Off Bryn Mawr, 5-4

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team hung on for a 5-4 victory against upset-hungry Bryn Mawr on Wednesday afternoon. The Fords (4-4, 1-1 CC) won four of the six singles matches to ultimately close the door on the neighboring Owls (3-5, 0-2 CC).

The host Fords experienced their greatest success at the top of the lineup with Robyn Himelstein and Abby Payson recording wins in both singles and doubles action. Opening up doubles play, it was the No. 1 pairing of Himelstein and Payson who nabbed the final match of doubles action with an 8-4 score. The Owls were able to secure two victories in doubles by that same 8-4 margin.

Playing at No. 1 singles, Himelstein made the quickest work of her opponent as she allowed just one game in the opening set. She then blanked her opponent in the second during a straight set victory. The Fords' lone senior is now 4-2 during the spring season at the No. 1 singles position. Payson allowed just three games to her opponent at No. 2 singles. The Fords' junior co-captain won by a 6-2, 6-1 score.

Haverford continued its control of the top of the lineup with a back-to-back 6-3 set wins from Caroline Steliotes at No. 3 singles. That win was Steliotes' highest ranked win of the spring season as she has now played each of the Nos. 3 through 6 positions. Stephany Prodromos moved her season record to 3-2 with a win at No. 5 singles. In her freshman campaign, Prodromos pulled through in a 6-4 opening set before blanking her opponent in the following act. The Owls took the singles matches at No. 4 and No. 6.

With the three-match homestand to close the month of March coming to an end on Wednesday, the Fords will now head out on the road for three straight matches to open April's schedule. The first of those scheduled road trips will take place this Saturday at McDaniel with first serves scheduled for 12 p.m.
