Women's Tennis Starts Strong at ITA Southeast Regional

FREDERICKSBURG ,Va. – The Haverford College women's tennis team had strong showings from several individuals on Saturday during the opening day of the ITA Southeast Regional. The Fords sent two players into the Blue singles semifinal rounds and another doubles pairing into the Blue doubles semifinals.

Jessica Liu and Ali Morrow will represent Haverford in semifinal matches tomorrow in singles action. Liu, playing Blue 3 singles, did not drop a set on Saturday. She won 6-1, 6-2 against St. Mary's Marissa Romanek. She punched her ticket to the semifinal round with a win over fellow Centennial Conference player Aileen BeVard from Ursinus by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Liu will compete in the semifinals at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday morning and again at 2 p.m. if she advances to the championship match.

Playing in Blue 6 singles, Ali Morrow did not drop a game as she recorded successive 6-0, 6-0 blankings of Thomas More's Nicole Capodagli and Washington College's Kiran Pant. Morrow will face Grove City's Jennifer Elder at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in the semifinal with a 3 p.m. championship potentially waiting in the wings.

In Blue 3 doubles, Izzy Angstman and Clara Farrehi advanced with an 8-0 win against their opponents from Randolph College in the opening match before an 8-3 win against Thomas More's duo in the quarterfinals. That team will be back on the court at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. Abby Payson and Liu nearly made the Blue 1 doubles semifinals, but were edged out by a 9-7 score in their quarterfinal match. The senior co-captains started the day together with an 8-4 win against Franklin & Marshall.

Competing in the championship draws, Emily Shutman took down Washington College's Rachel Martinez in straight sets before falling to a seeded opponent in the round of 32. Julia Gan and Payson each dropped their opening match of the championship draw and will play at least one consolation match tomorrow. Gan and Shutman also teamed up in championship doubles, but fell to the No. 5 seeded pairing from Carnegie Mellon.
