HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team got a win from senior captain Jessica Liu at No. 6 singles to highlight a hard-fought performance on Friday afternoon against No. 15 Johns Hopkins (11-4, 6-0 CC). Liu's win for the Fords was Haverford's first match taken off of the Blue Jays since a 7-2 defeat during the spring of 2014.

Liu's latest victory makes her 9-4 on the year in singles as she currently boasts a perfect 5-0 record in Centennial Conference action. She is 6-1 overall during the spring season. The Fords' captain was a straight set winner, defeating her opponent by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Haverford almost had another point with the help of Liu as she and partner Clara Farrehi took the Blue Jays' No. 3 doubles team into a tiebreak following an 8-8 split of the first 16 games. However, the pairing of Liu and Farrehi was edged in the tiebreak by a 7-5 score.

Even with only one win to show in the final team score, the Fords showed great battle throughout the lineup. Greta Koch and Abby Payson won two games at No. 1 doubles, while Emily Shutman and Jane Bary took three games off of their opposition at No. 2 doubles.

The Fords also won at least two games in eight of the 12 singles sets contested. In addition to Liu's win, Shutman gave the No. 24 ranked singles player in the country all she could handle during a 6-4 opening set before collecting two more games in the second set. Rory Lewis won three games in the opening set of her match at No. 5 singles and two more in the second set.

At Nos. 2 through 4 singles, Koch, Payson, and Bary all won two games during their respective opening sets. Payson and Bary also went on to capture another game in the second set.

Women's tennis will now have the rest of the weekend away from competition. The Fords return to action with a quick trip on Tuesday to Bi-Co neighbor Bryn Mawr for a 4 p.m. start. They will also travel to Dickinson next Saturday before closing out the regular season with two home matches.
