HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team recorded its first win of the spring season with a 7-2 victory over Salisbury on Saturday inside the Alumni Field House. The Fords' (1-1) win was their first since 2012 against the Sea Gulls and just the second in nine meetings. The 7-2 score was the Fords' most convincing victory in the all-time series.

Haverford got off to a great start with three hard-fought doubles victories. Keeping together the winning pair at No. 1 doubles from the match against NYU, the duo of Jane Bary and Emily Shutman needed an extra game, but were victorious by a 9-7 score in the top doubles match. After Saturday's win, Shutman has a team-leading four victories in doubles during the 2017-18 season.

Julia Gan and Greta Koch teamed up at No. 2 doubles and came away with an 8-5 win in the middle position. Koch now has three total wins in doubles dating back to the fall season. Sam Berg and Clara Farrehi made it a clean sweep of doubles play with their tiebreak win at third doubles. After evenly splitting the first 16 games, Haverford's pairing won the tiebreak by a 7-4 score.

Needing just two more wins to seal the team victory against a historically-challenging opponent, the Fords got those victories from Bary and Shutman who carried their momentum into singles. Shutman played No. 4 singles and allowed just one game to her opponent in both sets of her win. Bary played No. 2 singles and allowed just two games in each set during her straight set victory.

Not letting up with the match in hand, Koch came through with a 10-point tiebreak at No. 3 singles. Falling behind a set, she forced the tiebreak with a 6-4 win in the second. The senior co-captain captured the 10-point tiebreak by a 10-7 score for her fourth singles win of the year. Gan split a pair of 7-5 sets to start her day before being forced to retire during her 10-point tiebreak at No. 1.

In the final two matches to hit the courts, Berg won by identical 6-2 set scores for her first career singles victory as she was one of four double winners on the day for Haverford. Farrehi forced her opponent to play extra games at No. 5 singles before being edged out by a 7-5 score. Her opponent secured a 6-1 second set win to conclude Haverford's 7-2 team victory.

Women's tennis will now depart for Orlando, Florida where the team is scheduled to play three matches during the College's Spring Break. Up first will be a Tuesday, March 13 match against Schreiner that is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
