Emily Shutman named CC Player of the Week

Centennial Conference release

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Emily Shutman has been named the Centennial Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week after her victories in singles and doubles against No. 40 TCNJ nearly led the Fords to an upset win against the nationally-ranked Lions. Already a two-time All-Centennial Conference performer in both singles and doubles, the player of the week recognition is the first of Shutman's career.

Playing No. 2 doubles alongside first-year Lisette Pham in the spring opener, that pairing got Haverford on the board with an 8-5 victory. The win was the 32nd of Shutman's doubles career at Haverford and moves her into the top 20 for doubles wins all-time. Shutman has earned second-team All-CC recognition for her play in doubles during each of the past two seasons.

Moving over to singles, Shutman assumed her role at the top of the lineup but found herself down a set early. Haverford's co-captain rallied back to even the match with a 6-3 in the second set before securing another team point with a 6-4 triumph during the decisive third set. That win also put the Fords on the brink of the team victory as Haverford led 4-3 after that match. However, the Lions played some skillful tennis to record come-from-behind three-set victories during the last two matches on court to escape with the 5-4 team win.

Also a two-time All-CC honoree in singles, Shutman earned first-team accolades for her singles play a season ago. She now has 31 career victories in singles after Sunday's victory. Adding to her success on the court, Shutman is also a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and two-time selection to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for the Fords.

Women's tennis will return to action during the College's week of spring break with a trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. That week of matches begins on Saturday, March 8 as the Fords play both Catholic (9:30 a.m.) and Gordon (4 p.m.) at the Evian Tennis Center. Haverford is scheduled to play a total of five matches during its time in South Carolina.
