HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In a matchup of regionally-ranked programs from a season ago, the Haverford College women's team fell by a 5-4 score against Berry on Tuesday. The Fords (2-2) got the early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches, but the Vikings (5-2) rallied back with four singles victories to claim the narrow advantage.

The Fords are now 9-3 this spring in doubles following two more wins on Tuesday. Emily Shutman and Lisette Pham improved to a perfect 4-0 together this spring with a strong 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Berry countered that team point with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles as Sarah Evenson and Clara Farrehi returned to their usual slot in the lineup.

With the doubles advantage coming down to No. 1, Haverford's top pairing of Anne Tobin and Natalie Williams answered that challenge by doubling up their opponents in an 8-4 final. The Tobin/Williams team is now 3-1 at the top of the doubles lineup this spring.

Lisette Pham captured Haverford's third team point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Haverford's first-year is 2-1 in singles this spring. Berry countered that point with a win at No. 4 singles. Nevertheless, fellow first-year Isa Cossio put Haverford on the brink of victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Cossio remained unbeaten at 4-0 in spring singles, including three consecutive straight-set victories in South Carolina.

Unfortunately for the Fords, Berry turned the tables on that 4-2 Haverford lead by winning the last three matches. Haverford challenged throughout the remainder of play, but just could not secure that elusive fifth team point despite No. 5 and No. 6 singles both winning four games in their respective final sets.

Women's tennis will now have Wednesday and Thursday away from competition. The Fords return to live action on Friday, March 13 with their final two matches in South Carolina as Haverford battles Rhodes (8:30 a.m.) and Lake Forest (4:30 p.m.) to close out its spring break trip.
