Tobin Wins On Senior Day, But TCNJ Edges No. 36 Women's Tennis, 5-4

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford senior captain Anne Tobin returned to the singles lineup on Senior Day at the Bramall Courts on Saturday, registering a three-set triumph at No. 6 singles, but TCNJ (14-2) took a non-conference win over No. 36 Haverford (10-6), thanks in part to a 3-0 advantage after doubles. TCNJ has not lost to Division III competition to this season, finishing its regular season unblemished with only two losses to out-of division foes.

All three doubles points went to the Lions as the regionally-ranked pairing of Charlotte Roarty and Jenny Landells took an 8-1 win to overwhelm Ellie Esterowitz and Abbey Russano. The team of Annie Barrett and Summer Williams then looked strong at third doubles, but eventually fell 8-6 to give TCNJ a 2-0 lead before Rachael Fitzgerald and Tobin were outlasted in a tiebreaker by Anusha Rangu and Aira Abalos 8-7 (7-5) at the second pairing.

Moving into singles, it was Haverford that proved to be the stronger side in the early goings. The third singles pairing went to Esterowitz by a dominating 6-2, 6-0 score to put Haverford's first tally on the board. Williams grabbed an early lead over Chase Eisenberg before Eisenberg was forced to retire, putting Haverford within one with a tally at the fourth flight. The match was tied at 3-3 as Russano, regionally ranked No. 22, collected a 6-1, 6-2 win over regionally-ranked Roarty at the top flight.

With the fight to the finish now set up for both sides, Abalos grabbed a win over Fitzgerald at the second singles flight (6-3, 6-1), and Landells then outlasted Annie Barrett in a three-set thriller. Landells was a 6-2 winner in the opener before Barrett stormed back with a 6-2 win over her own. Landells came out on top in the third by a 6-1 final.

With the match decision clinched for the visitors, Tobin had a chance to record a big victory on Senior Day, rallying past Morgan Grimmie at the sixth singles flight. It was Grimmie grabbing a 6-3 win in the first set, but Tobin rallied 6-1 to set up the deciding third, a set that went 7-5 for the Baltimore product, her first singles victory of the season and fifth in her career. Tobin has also logged 21 doubles wins despite two pandemic-shortened seasons.

Haverford now jumps right back into CC play with a trip to Bryn Mawr on Wednesday, April 27. That match will start at 4 p.m. before the regular season finale on Saturday, April 30 at Gettysburg. Time of that match is 12 p.m.
