Women's Tennis Perfect on Opening Day of Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team picked up several strong individual performances on the opening day of the Swarthmore Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Haverford won all 20 matches it played across doubles and singles, dropping just one set on a fantastic day for tennis. The invitational also features Franklin & Marshall, Washington College and the host Garnet and will continue tomorrow with the Fords and Garnet squaring off. 

In singles play against Washington College, Ellie Esterowitz posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Irene Meng, and Mimi Lavin was a 6-1, 6–0 winner over Eva Kading. Rachel Fitzgerald breezed past Piper Sartison (6-4, 6-1), and Summer Williams got the sweep of Soleil Namunyola (6-4, 6-3). Sriya Krishnan marked her collegiate debut with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Isabella Sorhegui and Annie Barrett dispatched Bin Nguyen (6-4, 7-5).

In doubles, the pairing of Esterowitz and Lavin were winners over Meng/Kading (8-1) and the team of Fitzgerald and Williams took down Sartison/Namunyola (8-0). Erika Phanord and Abhi Menon teamed up to take down Sorhegui/Nguyen by an 8-2 final in their collegiate debuts. 

Against F&M, the Fords continued that same singles momentum with Esterowitz earning a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cassidy Landau and Lavin earning a superbreaker win over Jenna Harrison (6-3, 6-7, 10-6). Fitzgerald got past Mackenzie Sherman (6-4, 6-2), and Williams did the same against Clara March (6-4, 6-2). Menon took down Sammi Perry (7-6(7), 6-2) and Phanord earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Amelia Squires. Krishnan was the winner over Presley Daggett in a pro set (8-2) while Phanord did the same against Jocelyn Chow (8-3). 

In doubles, the pairing of Lavin/Esterowitz took down the pairing of Sherman/Harrison (8-5), while the pairing of Fitzgerald/Williams prevailed by an 8-0 blanking. The Krishnan/Barrett pairing was an 8-4 winner over Squires/Perry. 

Both singles and doubles action will continue on Sunday right back at Swarthmore, beginning at 9 a.m.
