Balmer and Hendry pace Fords at Lafayette/Rider Winter Games

NEW YORK - Katie Balmer and Fiona Hendry finished first and second, respectively, in the college division mile to highlight a strong showing by the Haverford College women's indoor track & field team at the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games held at The Armory on Friday afternoon.

Registering the fifth-fastest indoor time in the mile in program history, Balmer took first with a career-best mark of 5 minutes, 3.56 seconds. Hendry, in her first collegiate attempt at the mile, followed in 5:04.17. Balmer and Hendry's times, converted from the Armory's banked track to the NCAA-standard flat track, currently rank fourth and sixth among Centennial Conference performances this season. Emily Scott also ran well with a career-best finish of 5:14.55 which sits 14th on the conference performance list.

Joining Hendry in making an impact in her first collegiate attempt at an event was Nora Weathers who claimed seventh in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:20.28. Junior Erin Seglem placed ninth and senior Bridget Gibbons put forth a season-best effort (2:23.96) to finish 12th.

Andrea Tocci, Kelley Riffenburgh and Kara McMahon provided a trio of career-best times in the 3,000 meter run. Tocci finished in 10:28.78 to take fifth while Riffenburgh followed in sixth (10:33.05). McMahon completed the career-best trifecta with an eighth-place finish in 10:37.06. Tocci's time currently ranks ninth in the Centennial this season.

Emma Kornetsky led the Haverford effort off the track as she finished eighth in the long jump with a career-best effort of 5.02 meters (34 feet, 6.75 inches). Kornetsky's mark stands fifth on the conference performance list.

The Fords' final tune-up of the regular season occurs on Friday, Feb. 15 as Haverford hosts the Keogh Invitational. Action at The Gary Lutnick Tennis and Track Center in Alumni Field House begins at 5 p.m.
