Volleyball Trip to Puerto Rico: Game Day/A New Hope (Day 4)

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Volleyball is getting ready for the 2014 season with a preseason trip to Puerto Rico. The team departed the United States on Wednesday, August 20 and is scheduled to return on Sunday, August 24. Junior Sara Rennert is writing about the team's experience. The Fords' daily activities will be updated throughout the trip on HaverfordAthletics.com.

On an island far, far away, one volleyball team will rise from the ashes to compete against teams from Puerto Rico and America alike. Throughout the day we played the University of Puerto Rico, Univerista Metropolitana, and Elmira College. We tried out many different line ups during each of our three-set matches. See below to check out the scores of our games. From the looks of it we're starting off the season on a good foot and it can only get better as we go on. Our hitters were mixing up clever tips with strong swings, while our defensive specialists were picking up the hardest of serves and hits, and our setters had quick hands as they doled out consistent sets to our hitters. Shout out to junior Keri Godbe for playing through a strained ab muscle and also to our freshmen Zoe Wong and Meagan McPhee for fitting right in with the team on their first play day. In between game two and three we had a quick bite at a pizza place that made really yummy food. Platters varied from pizza and pasta to salads and all were tasty. Overall we had a great experience playing the teams from Puerto Rico and the Elmira College team well.

When we returned to the hotel some of us went out to the pool and Jacuzzi even though it was raining. We all went to dinner at a local restaurant called Mi Casita. A lot of the girls got a dish called mafongo, which consists of smashed plantains with either chicken, pork, or, shrimp. Some of us got Baskin Robbins ice cream afterwards and walked back to the hotel through the pouring rain. Tomorrow we depart from Puerto Rico, but not before finally getting our beach day in! We're planning on seeing Old San Juan and going to the beach so be prepared for many lovely photographs on our last day on the island.

Saturday's Scores:
Lost vs. University of Puerto Rico (2-1), 25-19, 19-25, 25-15
Lost vs. Univerista Metropolitana (2-1), 25-16, 25-17, 27-27
Won vs.  Elmira (3-0), 25-20, 25-14, 15-12

Coming Soon:
- To beach or not to beach? That is the question
- Bye bye Puerto Rico, parting is such sweet sorrow.
- Old San Juan AND the beach? Will we fit both in?
