ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team (12-0) won its 11th and 12th consecutive matches of the season Saturday afternoon, wrapping up the Buttermaker Tournament with a 3-1 win over the College of Mount St. Vincent (25-13, 17-25, 25-15, 25-19) and a 3-2 victory over Stockton (25-27, 25-16, 25-23, 8-25, 15-11) at Memorial Hall on the campus of Muhlenberg College. The Fords are on their longest winning streak since the 2007 team started with 24 consecutive victories en route to the Centennial Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Regional Final. Haverford has already eclipsed its win total from a season ago, with conference play still more than a week away.
Sara Matsumura (109 digs, 11 service aces) and Kendall Otridge (12 total blocks, 27 kills, .348 hitting percentage) were both named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of matches.
Haverford 3, CMSV 1
Haverford outlasted the defending Skyline Conference champion Dolphins in the morning match, hitting .414 in the first set and a whopping .550 in the third to cruise to victory after a second-set slip up. Lindsey Keener had 13 kills to pace Haverford, while Dina Kosyagin added 12. Sydney Miller notched 30 assists, and Sara Matsumura recorded 26 digs. Isabel Schwam contributed 13, her fourth consecutive contests with 10 or more digs.
Three different Fords (Elena Filograna, Matsumura, and Schwam) recorded multiple service aces. The blocking effort was keyed by Julia Gallagher-Teske, who tallied seven total blocks. Madison Adore collected four.
Haverford 3, Stockton 2
In the afternoon match, the Fords withstood a tough challenge from the Ospreys, dropping the first set before rallying to tie things with a nearly flawless second set. Haverford kept the offensive pressure up in the third and fifth sets to come away with a dramatic win.
Haverford spread its offensive effort around, as Kosyagin was the only Ford with double-digit kills, posting 10. Otridge, Adore, Keener, and Miller each had nine kills. Miller had another strong showing at setter, adding 36 assists. Miller has recorded 30 or more assists in eight of her 11 contests this season.
Matsumura, the reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week, did all she could to cement her spot on the All-Tournament team. Haverford's libero added 43 digs, the fourth-most in the program's single match history, while also grabbing three service aces. Filograna (15) and Schwam (11) also added double-digit digs.
Otridge had a standout game defensively, putting her mark on the match with nine blocks to earn All-Tournament honors for the first time in her career. The nine-block mark is a career-best for the first year, and is tied for the third-most in program history for a five-set match. Adore added seven blocks, while Gallagher-Teske contributed five more, pushing her career total to 348, just five away from tying Jelyn Meyer '04 for Haverford's all-time lead.
The win was Haverford's first over Stockton since the 2010 campaign, as the Fords pulled to within one win of tying the all-time series with the Ospreys (9-10).
Haverford will now conclude its run through tournament play with next weekend's Arcadia Classic, which begins Friday, September 20. The Fords will do battle with Salisbury Friday night (7 p.m.) before returning on Saturday for matches against Lycoming (11 a.m.) and UC Santa Cruz (1 p.m.). Conference play opens at home, as the Fords host Muhlenberg Wednesday, September 25 (7 p.m.)
