HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College volleyball team (18-8, 4-3 CC), dropped a pair of matches in its home tri-match Saturday afternoon inside Gooding '84 Arena. The Fords were defeated by McDaniel (11-10, 5-2 CC) in three sets by set scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 before falling to Stockton (24-2), a team receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, in four sets by a final of 26-28, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17.
McDaniel 3, Haverford 0
McDaniel began the contest on a 10-3 run, with Marlowe Embry and Isabel Paci both keying the early efforts for the Green Terror. The Fords rallied to pull within two at 13-11, as a pair of Lindsey Keener service aces served as a prelude to a kill from Sydney Miller. A run with Kennedy Barlond at the service line allowed the Green Terror to stretch its advantage to 23-10, before a kill from Paci eventually ended the set in favor of the visitors at 25-15.
A 10-5 jaunt to begin the second allowed McDaniel to take command, with the Green Terror eventually going ahead 21-11 behind another run from Barlond at the service line in a 25-16 victory. In the third Haverford began to find an offensive rhythm, sticking with the visitors early. Unfortunately, a 10-3 spurt from McDaniel opened the advantage up a bit, as the Fords were unable to knock the Green Terror out of its rhythm with a pair of timeouts.
A service ace from Kendall Robison eventually cut the lead to just three, and the Fords were within that same margin as late as 20-17 before three consecutive kills from Anna Jezerski down the stretch helped the visitors put away the set and the match at 25-19.
Madison Adore grabbed five kills to pace Haverford, while Miller contributed 19 assists. Elena Filograna had nine digs to lead the Fords. Paci had a match-best 12 kills for the Green Terror, while Gayle Edelstein tallied 26 assists.
Stockton 3, Haverford 1
In a rematch of Haverford's impressive victory over Stockton last month, the Fords proved to again be a thorn in the side of the Ospreys out of the gates. Haverford, one of only two squads to beat Stockton this season, matched the output of the Ospreys in the first set, as the Fords stuck around in the back-and-forth battle, eventually taking a 23-22 lead on a Dina Kosyagin kill. The two sides swapped jabs with the Fords seemingly having an answer for everything Stockton tried to throw at the hosts. The two sides looked to be every bit as inseparable as they seemed in Haverford's five-set victory on September 14, as the Gooding Arena crowd came alive with the intensity of the action peaking. Eventually, the Fords were able to sideout on an attack error, and take the match on an emphatic block from Kendall Otridge at 28-26.
In the second, it was Stockton that got out to an early 16-9 lead, eventually taking a 25-17 victory behind an impressive .565 hitting percentage. In the third, a 20-9 start for Stockton was again too much to overcome for the Fords in a 25-19 victory for the visitors.
The start of the fourth set resembled the first, with neither team getting any measure of separation in an early tug-of-war. Blocks from Julia Gallagher-Teske and Kosyagin helped Haverford pull to within one at 12-11, but a 5-0 run from the Ospreys gave some breathing room back to Stockton at 18-12.
The Fords called for timeout down 22-13, and were able to pull to 24-17 behind a strong turn at the service line from Robison, including the last of her three service aces to cap a 3-0 spurt. Jocelyn Holobetz later ended the match for the Ospreys with a kill at 27-15.
Kosyagin was an integral part of the Haverford offense in the late afternoon match, tallying 15 kills. Madison Adore added 10, while Kendall Otridge (six) and Riley Outen (four) also played an expanded role offensively in the non-conference clash. Miller notched 33 assists while Isabel Schwam had a match-best 18 digs.
Gallagher-Teske recorded three blocks, while Kosyagin and Otridge each added a pair. Gallagher-Teske now has 408 blocks for her career and is just three away from sole ownership of seventh place all-time on the Centennial Conference career leaderboard. The Fords tallied nine total team blocks in the contest.
The Fords will return to action on Saturday, October 26 as they head to Dickinson for a tri-match. First serve against the Red Devils is slated for 12 p.m. before Haverford takes on Misericordia in a neutral-site match at approximately 2 p.m.
