One Love Foundation

The One Love organization exists for one reason
Yeardley Love, a senior at the University of Virginia, was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend and her death was avoidable. After her death, her family created One Love, a foundation that educates young people about the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships so that they may seek help before an abusive relationship escalates to violence.

One Love’s Mission
Love is the most important thing in our lives, yet we are taught very little about it. One Love is on a mission to change that. They educate young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships, empowering them to identify and avoid abuse and learn how to love better.

How They Do It
They engage young people with powerful films and honest conversation. Through our workshops and peer-to-peer discussions, One Love offers a framework that helps students spread our message online and in their communities.

Specifically, The Escalation Workshop is a film-based experience that educates about the warning signs of an abusive relationship. Utilizing peer-facilitators trained by One Love staff, Escalation provides young people with the framework they need to identify the warning signs and the tools to help a friend who may be in an abusive situation. The participants watch a 45 minute film and they break up into small groups to have peer-led discussions about the topic.

The Impact

  • 950,000 people educated through in-person workshops
  • 88% of workshop participants say they’ve become more aware of the 10 signs of an unhealthy relationship
  • 90% of students said they would recommend One Love’s workshop to a friend.

Haverford Athletics and One Love

2021 Fall Escalation Workshop

The Haverford College athletic department finds One Love’s mission very important and has brought The Escalation Workshop to campus. In the 2018-19 school year, the athletic department hosted three workshops for all of its student-athletes. In the fall of 2019, the department hosted another workshop for all of the first-year student-athletes. Over 60 members of the Class of 2023 attended. After receiving very positive feedback from the student-athletes who attended the workshops, the department plans to continue providing a One Love workshop each fall for all new student-athletes. Please contact Drew Hargrave, head volleyball coach and One Love program coordinator, at dhargrave@haverford.edu if you have any questions.

Haverford College One Love Club

In the fall of 2019, two students, Sarah Cahn and Hailey Morris, started a One Love club on campus. The club plans to host several events to create more awareness on campus. Please visit the One Love club website if you would like more information!
