Richard Carrington was named the head coach of the Haverford College men’s lacrosse program in July of 2023. Carrington joins Haverford from Amherst College, where he served as the defensive coordinator and assistant coach for the Mammoths for the past two seasons.

Haverford Director of Athletics Danielle Lynch expressed her enthusiasm in announcing Carrington's hiring, stating, "I am thrilled to announce the hiring of Richard Carrington to lead our men's lacrosse program. Richard comes with extensive coaching experience across all NCAA divisions and is considered a tactical and strategic specialist. At the helm, Richard will execute his vision for the program and start the next chapter of Haverford men's lacrosse."

"I want to thank Dr. Wendy Raymond, Dean John McKnight, and Director of Athletics Danielle Lynch for the opportunity to restore Haverford College Men's Lacrosse to national prominence," Carrington said.

" ‘Grow the game' is a constant theme in the lacrosse community. I believe that growing the game can only be achieved by diversification and making our game more accessible. The values at Haverford College serve as the ideal environment to promote diversity within lacrosse and higher education. Carrington continued, “Additionally, the members of the men's lacrosse team at Haverford take great pride in their scholastic, civic, and athletic achievements, and I aim to help them develop and utilize the innovative spirit that is cultivated at Haverford College."

During his tenure at Amherst, Carrington played a pivotal role in guiding the team to consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament, including a third-round appearance this season, before falling to the eventual national champion, Salisbury.

Before his time at Amherst, Carrington made a significant impact as the first director of lacrosse and head men's lacrosse coach at Division II Tusculum University in Tennessee. Over the course of eight seasons, he built the program from scratch and achieved remarkable success.

In the team's inaugural campaign, Tusculum posted five wins, the most among new programs that season. Carrington led the Pioneers to their best season in school history in 2017, with an 11-4 record and a runner-up finish in the South Atlantic Conference.

The team's impressive performance in that campaign earned them a ranking as high as 18th in the USILA/Nike D2 Coaches Poll, and the squad excelled in 10 team statistical categories, securing the 2017 NCAA Division II National Statistical Championship for assists per game (8.93).

Carrington's coaching journey also includes stops at Virginia Military Institute, Alvernia University, Chestnut Hill College, Kenyon College, Mars Hill University, and Cape Henry Collegiate School.

With over 20 years of coaching experience, Carrington has made significant contributions to collegiate lacrosse. He founded the men's lacrosse program at Chestnut Hill and played a pivotal role in recruiting the inaugural class of 37 members from 10 different states and Canadian provinces to the Philadelphia institution.

The Charlottesville, Va. native holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mars Hill University, where he was a four-year defensive starter and the program's career ground ball leader (268). He earned a Master of Arts degree in Sports Administration from Tusculum in 2022. He and his wife, Leanne, have one daughter, Collins Faith.
