Women's Basketball Claims NCAA Division III Statistical Championship in Scoring Defense

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team claimed an NCAA Division III statistical championship for the 2021-22 season, finishing first in the nation in scoring defense (45.0 ppg). Haverford allowed its opponents the fewest points across all three NCAA divisions. Showcasing a relentless defensive pressure, the Fords earned a 10th consecutive trip to the Centennial Conference tournament, reaching the semifinals after finishing with an 18-8 overall record (14-6 CC) and recording 18 contests holding opponents to less than 50 points.

Playing a lockdown brand of basketball that was in step with the rest of the Centennial Conference, Haverford was joined in the top 10 by three other Centennial Conference squads as Johns Hopkins (46.4), Gettysburg (47.6), and Dickinson (49.6) were all also in the top 10 with Swarthmore (51.6) in 22nd. The team's defensive pressure and grind-it-out style became a hallmark down the stretch, with Haverford finding ways to win games in close battles in the waning moments of contests.

Haverford also excelled in other defensive categories, finishing fifth in the nation in three-point percentage defense (22.1 percent) and field goal percentage (30.7 percent). Cortlyn Morris finished sixth in the nation in blocked shots per game (3.04) and total blocks (79).

After the 2014-15 campaign, standout guard Jacquelyne Pizzuto '15 was named the Statistical Champion in assist-to-turnover ratio, the only other statistical championship in program history.
