Women’s Soccer Taken Down by No. 8 Johns Hopkins, 4-0

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Haverford College Women's Soccer team (6-8-1, 2-6 CC) suffered a defeat Saturday, losing to No. 8 Johns Hopkins (11-1-2, 8-0-1 CC) on Homewood Field.

Johns Hopkins, the defending national champions, set the tone for the contest early, scoring in just the ninth minute. Megha Salvi jumped onto a long ground pass down the flank and headed towards the end line. The Blue Jay midfielder then placed a driven ball right in front of the net for teammate Katie Sullivan, who hit the shot home to give Johns Hopkins the 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later, the Blue Jays struck again, this time from an unassisted goal by Sullivan. The junior forward collected the ball at the top of the box and curled a menacing shot past Haverford goalkeeper Allie Billups, increasing the Johns Hopkins lead to two.

The 22nd minute saw JHU go up by three, thanks to a goal from Kacie Filian. The goal came from a beauty of a cross from Ava Venuti. The cross found the head of Filian who headed the ball perfectly into the bottom corner, to give the Blue Jays a quick 3-0 lead.

At half, Johns Hopkins held a substantial lead in shots 13-1, but only had three shots on goal. Despite the lopsided score, the Blue Jays had just one more corner kick than the Fords (2-1).

JHU got right back to business in the second half, scoring within the first two minutes of the stanza. Off of a corner kick, Johns Hopkins' Lyndon Wood pounced on an opportunity and struck a shot on a frame that was saved by Billups. Wood followed up her own shot and found the back of the net, to push the Blue Jays' lead to four.

Johns Hopkins continued to pressure the Haverford defense in the second half, firing off seven total shots, with five being on goal. Despite the relentless efforts, the Fords shut the door on the Blue Jays for the rest of the half, with the contest ending 4-0 in favor of Johns Hopkins.

Lily Buyer was in between the posts for half two, making four saves on the contest. Kiera Prince led the Fords in shots with two.

The Fords return to action Tuesday October 24, as they travel right up the road to take on the Owls of Bryn Mawr in Centennial Conference action. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
