No. 33 Women’s Tennis Turns Away Diplomats, 8-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The No. 33 Haverford College women's tennis team (9-5, 6-1 CC) defeated Centennial Conference foe Franklin & Marshall (7-10, 5-2 CC) 8-1, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Bettye Marshall and Norman B. Bramall Tennis Courts.

Before the match, the Fords honored its Class of 2024, Annie Barrett, Mimi Lavin, Emily Oh, Abbey Russano, and Summer Williams, in a Senior Day ceremony, celebrating their hard work and dedication over the past four seasons.

Starting off with doubles play, the dynamic duo of Ellie Esterowitz and Russano took down Sophia Rhazali and Mackenzie Sherman 8-2 on court one, to give the Scarlet and Black their first point of the day. The Diplomats leveled the match at 1-1, after Lorena Saavendra and Amelia Squires slipped past  Emily Oh and Mimi Lavin 8-6, before the Fords took the third and final point, as Williams and Barrett claimed a 8-7 (7-4 tiebreaker) victory over Presley Daggett and Kathryn Colclough. 

Up 2-1 over F&M headed into singles play, Haverford claimed their third point of the day after Russano earned her second win of the day, defeating Jenna Harrison 6-2, 6-0 in flight one. Over on court two, Esterowitz also picked up win number two after vanquishing Rhazali 6-2, 6-2, to tack on the Scarlet and Black's fourth point of the day. Holding onto a 4-1 lead, Haverford snagged their match-clinching fifth point of the day, after Williams got past Squires 6-1, 6-1 in flight five. 

In the third flight, Lavin collected her first victory of the day, dispelling Sherman 6-2, 6-1, before an Emily Oh win, 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3 super tiebreaker) over Rebecca Bellick, made it 7-1. In the sixth flight, Barrett came away with her second win of the day, prevailing over Colclough 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4 super tiebreaker), to wrap up a 8-1 Centennial Conference victory for Haverford.

Next up for women's tennis, is a roadtrip to Chestertown, Md., to challenge the Shorewomen of Washington College on Tuesday, April 23, at 4 p.m.
