Balmer sets another program record in mile to advance to NCAA final

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Haverford College's Katie Balmer used another record-setting performance to qualify for the final in the mile on the opening day of the two-day NCAA Division III women's indoor track & field championships hosted by North Central College.

Setting a new program mark in the mile for the second time in less than a week, Balmer finished in 4 minutes, 55.85 seconds to place fifth in the mile's second preliminary heat and eighth overall. The top three from each of the two preliminaries automatically advanced joined by the next four best times from the 15-runner field.

Balmer's initial venture into the program annals in the mile took place last Saturday at the Columbia Unversity Qualifer as she raced to a career-best finish of 4:56.82. The sophomore also currently holds the indoor program record (2:15.67) in the 800 meter run.

The championship heat in the mile will take place on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. CST.
