The Haverford College athletic department handed out its end of the year awards and recognized all the amazing contributions from the student-athletes in the Class of 2020.
The Fords had four four fencers earn EWFC All-Star All-Star status this season. They represented each of the Fords' three weapons and will all return to the 2020-21 team.
After both earned EWFC All-Star status in the previous weeks, Maia Carvalho and Caroline Donado tested their mettle against the strong regional field in the entire country.
The EWFC All-Stars (Maia Carvalho; epee, Sarah Blossom; epee, Hanna Kopits; foil, and Carolina Donado; sabre) represented each of the Fords’ three weapon squads and were the most for Haverford since the 2014 season.
The Fords won all three squad matches in the victory against William & Mary while strong results from the epeeists and foilists led the way against Lafayette and Navy. Those two results came just one round after Haverford’s sabrists fueled a victory against Rutgers.
The annual bouts were followed by a banquet where the current varsity team got the chance to meet with the fencers who have come before them and established the tradition of Haverford fencing.
Organized by Eighth Dimension, Haverford's Office of Community Service, and promoted by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), this festival is another example of the Haverford athletic department supporting the NCAA Division III Special Olympics initiative.
Haverford was one of just 53 Division III institutions that were recognized by DIII and its national SAAC representatives for completing the 50 for 50th Challenge.
The Haverford College Athletic Department will induct its ninth class into the Thomas Glasser ’82 Hall of Achievement in the spring of 2020. The deadline for submission of nominees for the 2020 Hall of Achievement is August 1, 2019.
