PHILADELPHIA - Four Haverford College student-athletes have been named to the PhillySIDA Academic All-Area At-Large teams, the organization announced in a release on Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel Carvalho (men's fencing), Megan Heflinger (women's fencing), Quinton Crawford and Noah Tunis (men's squash) and Caroline and Maisie Smith (women's squash) all earned the honor for the Fords for the 2022-23 season.

These teams are nominated and voted on by the sports information offices of 30 colleges and universities in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area. Both the men's and women's groups are made up of 10 student-athletes each and a Performer of the Year is selected, as well. Nominated student-athletes must be in at least their second year at their current institution and carry at least a 3.30 GPA.

Carvalho, a junior political science major from the Boston area, was a second-team All-MACFA selection this season in epee, while helping his Haverford squad to a seventh place finish at the MACFA championships. In his direct elimination bout in the individual draw at the MACFA meet, he knocked off the top epeeist from Division I NJIT.

Heflinger, a senior sabreist and Biology major from San Diego, was named to the EWFC All-Academic team in 2022-23, an award that is designated to salute fencers who have stood out in both the classroom and on the fencing strips.

Heflinger is also an Ambler Scholar Athlete, a designation given to the Top 15 senior student-athletes by GPA at Haverford College. Heflinger anchored the sabre squad at the EWFC Championships, qualifying for the individual bouts in the event that culminates the regular season slate for the Fords.

Crawford, a Philosophy major and Economics minor from Boston, has registered two consecutive College Squash Association (CSA) Scholar-Athlete awards, and has 27 career wins as a member of the Haverford mens' squash team. That mark includes 14 wins at the top flight. Crawford represented Haverford at the CSA Individual Championships after both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, and had a stint on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) tour during the summer of 2022.

Tunis, a sophomore from Baltimore, has played primarily at the second flight for Haverford, amassing 16 career wins through his first two seasons with the Fords. He is the creator of the College Squash Association (CSA) "Shot of the Month" series, a weekly highlight recap that has gained over 19,000 views and brought notoriety to the expanding world of collegiate squash.

Caroline Smith, a chemistry major with a biochemistry concentration from West Simsbury, Connecticut, is the Haverford team captain and a two-time College Squash Association Scholar Athlete. She has amassed 26 career wins, including five at number three on the ladder for Haverford. Smith is also an Ambler Scholar Athlete, a designation given to the Top 15 senior student-athletes by GPA at Haverford College.

Twin sister Maisie Smith, a biology major with a biochemistry concentration, was also named a CSA Scholar-Athlete after the 2021-22 season, and is also an Ambler Scholar Athlete. She has 14 career wins in a career that was cut short due to injury. She logged 10 wins at number six singles for the Fords.
