Haverford hosts 22nd annual Billy Lake ALS basketball marathon

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College athletics will host the Billy Lake ALS Basketball Marathon on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The all-day basketball marathon, now in its third year at Haverford College’s Gardner Integrated Athletic Center, features youth and adult teams competing for fun while raising funds and awareness to fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Haverford’s women’s basketball team is serving as the host for the event in honor of Libby Meeks, the mother of former Ford captain Dominique Meeks ‘13. Libby Meeks passed away from ALS in August after battling the disease for more than a decade.

All community members are welcome to participate by playing or attending games. A silent auction will take place throughout the day in Gooding Arena.

Highlighting the day’s festivities will be a celebrity basketball contest held at 11 a.m. Notable figures scheduled to appear against Team Lake are Phil Martelli (St. Joseph’s University) as well as Michael Barkann of Comcast SportsNet.

In its 22nd year of existence, the marathon honors the courage of Lake, a Havertown resident, who succumbed to ALS in 1992 at the age of 42. Proceeds fund research programs for the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of The ALS Association in the hopes of finding a cure, as well as the Billy Lake Memorial Scholarship which has enabled over 20 students to attend Monsignor Bonner High School.
