Hoops from the Heart continues to make a difference

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Hoops from the Heart Martin Luther King Day initiative continues to make a difference in the local community, and the Haverford College men’s and women’s basketball teams play a major part.

The 13th installment of the annual youth basketball clinics raised $10,165 for the Community Action Agency of Delaware County (CAADC). In addition to operating shelters and daycare facilities for individuals and families, the CAADC provides many vital services including welfare to work programs and food and fuel assistance.

The Fords joined forces to welcome 127 children to Gooding Arena on the morning of January 20 for three hours of basketball instruction. Haverford players had the opportunity to mentor youth and share their knowledge of the game.

The collaborative community effort also included clinics at Cabrini College, Neumann University and Springfield High School in Delaware County.

In addition to the funds raised, all of the Hoops from the Hearts participants gave generously to the CAADC food bank as non-perishable items were collected at each site.

Since its inception, the Hoops from the Heart initiative, co-sponsored by the Haverford Township Recreation Department, has raised over $85,000 for the CAADC.
