Haverford College welcomes the Iroquois Lacrosse Program this weekend

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College will host “A Weekend of Native American Culture and Sport” this Friday and Saturday. The weekend is being sponsored by the Haverford College Department of Athletics, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship.

The idea for this weekend of events came from Haverford College men’s lacrosse player Henry Millson, who created a similar event during his senior year at The Taft School in Connecticut.

“Lacrosse is an important part of the Iroquois culture,” stated Millson. “This is an opportunity for the community to relearn about the forgotten part of ‘our’ history.”

The festivities begin with the showing and discussion of Shanti Thakur’s documentary Circles: A Native Approach to Restorative Justice Friday at 4:15 p.m. in Stokes 106. The Iroquois Lacrosse Program (ILP), made up of high school students from the Six Nations, will arrive on campus at 9 p.m. and will spend the evening with the Haverford men’s lacrosse team.

After having breakfast with the Fords Saturday morning, the lLP will take an admissions tour of the Haverford campus. The culminating events for the Program are a pair of lacrosse matches on Swan Field. The Iroquois Lacrosse Program will take on its hosts at 2:30 p.m. After the match, a gift exchange presentation will take place. The second match will be the ILP against Chestnut Hill College.
