SAAC names Welch Featured Student-Athlete

Zoe Welch ’11 of Orchard Park, N.Y. runs for both the indoor and outdoor track & field teams and participates in over seven events across both seasons. A captain of both teams, she has helped set school records in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 meter relays.

Welch was named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III All-Academic Team her sophomore and junior years. This past weekend Welch set her own personal record for the long jump (4.94m), which gives her the second best long jump in the Centennial Conference this year.

Head coach Fran Rizzo has high praise for Welch’s athletic and leadership ability.

“Over a four-year period Zoe has developed into one of the top sprinters in the Centennial Conference,” said Rizzo. “Most impressive to me and the other coaches is her development as a leader on the team. We are excited to see Zoe’s final performances in both the indoor championships in two weeks and the impending outdoor season. Zoe and the other captains are ready to lead the team to another successful completion to our seasons.”

Welch is a biology major who is researching the interactions between metalated porphyrin molecules and polypeptides. This past summer she worked at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. doing prostate cancer genetic research, and hopes to continue doing cancer or biotechnological research after she graduates this spring.
