Offensive output helps baseball take pair from Bullets

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team clinched a playoff spot in the upcoming Centennial Conference tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Gettysburg College Saturday afternoon. Haverford took Game 1, 12-6, and won the nightcap, 12-10.

Haverford (20-10, 11-4 CC) tallied 13 hits including five for extra bases in Game 1. Both Jeff Butera and Bobby Bailey belted home runs.

The Fords trailed, 4-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth, but an eight-run frame distanced HC from the Bullets. Haverford sent 13 batters to the plate, nine straight reached base and five straight had hits. Butera's RBI single to left plated two runs to tie the game. Mike Galetta followed with an RBI double that plated Charlie Carluccio for the go-ahead run. Bailey provided the exclamation point with a two-run homer to left, the first of his career.

Butera belted a leadoff home run in the sixth for one of two insurance runs that inning.

On the mound, Jonny Williams (5-2) tossed his third consecutive complete game. Williams surrendered 10 hits and four walks, but managed to pitch out of jams all day and allowed just four earned runs.

Derek Zaleski (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Gettysburg (13-17, 5-11 CC), giving up six earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

In Game 2, the Fords jumped on the board with a four-run second inning. Galetta hammered a two-run homer to left centerfield with no outs. Chase Kennedy followed with a single and Bailey tripled to center, scoring Kennedy all the way from first. Bailey came home with the fourth run on a ground out by Bobby Hubley.

Haverford added on to its lead in the third when Galetta blasted his second two-run homer of the game.

Meanwhile, starter Colin Sarafin (6-0) was perfect through 3.2 innings and was still dominant into the sixth. Ten of the 17 outs recorded by Sarafin were ground outs.

The first batter to reach base for Gettysburg was Mike Backus, who drew a two-out walk in the fourth. Pat Cody followed with an RBI triple to right center, but that was all the Bullets would get off Sarafin until the sixth.

In the sixth, Gettysburg pulled with a run with five runs on six hits and knocked Sarafin from the game. Mike Bozzi relieved Sarafin with two on and two outs, but issued a pair of walks which tied the score at 6-6. Dan Feller came on for Bozzi to record the final out of the sixth.

The Fords took back the lead in the bottom of the seventh as consecutive hits by Butera, Kennedy and Bailey brought in four runs and bounced starter Kyle Conklin (2-3) from the game in the process.

With a comfortable 11-6 lead heading into the eighth things seemed in favor of the Fords, but Gettysburg had one last rally in them. The Bullets plated four runs, three of which came on a three-run home run by Kevin Langhauser. Feller gave up a single to Cam Riera and was relieved by Carluccio.

After an error extended the inning, Cody singled up the middle to bring home Riera and make the score 11-10. Carluccio escaped the jam by getting Matt Karis to hit into a fielder's choice.

A much needed insurance run came in the bottom of the inning as Butera singled in Jake Chaplin to give the Fords a two-run lead. Carluccio retired the side in order in the ninth to record his fourth save of the season.

Six Fords had a multi-hit game. Butera went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Galetta drove in four runs and scored three. Bailey had a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI.

The doubleheader sweep solidifies a playoff spot for Haverford, marking the third straight season in the conference tournament. Johns Hopkins University clinched first-place with its sweep of Muhlenberg College Saturday, so the Fords will battle for second place and the opportunity to host an opening round playoff game.

Haverford travels to Franklin & Marshall College Sunday for a 1 p.m. first pitch in a makeup of Friday's scheduled game which was postponed.
