Baseball opens Centennial tournament with archrival Swarthmore

The Haverford College baseball team hosts archrival Swarthmore College Friday in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament at 3 p.m. This is Haverford's fifth appearance in the Centennial Conference tournament and third straight. The Fords reached the championship game in 2006 and 2008.

Haverford and the Garnet split their two previous meetings this season. The Fords won, 12-4, Apr. 6 thanks to an eight-run first. Six Fords had multi-hit games and every Haverford starter had at least one RBI or run scored in the contest. Charlie Carluccio led Haverford's offense going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Dan Hochberg pitched 7.0 quality innings to earn the win.

Three days later Swarthmore avenged the loss with a 7-4 win behind starter Dylan Jensen's three-run, 8.0 inning performance. The Fords out hit host Swarthmore, but the Garnet used four unearned runs to take the win

The tournament shifts to No. 1 seed Johns Hopkins University Saturday and Sunday. The winner of Friday's game will face the winner of Friday's other first round game between Hopkins and Washington College in Game 4 of the tournament Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The losers will play Game 3, which is an elimination game, starting Saturday at 9 a.m. The winner of Game 4 moves on to the championship while the winner of Game 3 plays the loser of Game 4 Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the winner heading to the championship.
