Miranda and Bergjans tabbed for players of the week honors

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Centennial Conference closed its books on the 2012 baseball season Monday afternoon naming Haverford College's Nick Miranda and Tommy Bergjans its player and pitcher of the week, respectively, following the Fords' successful championship run through the postseason conference tournament.

Miranda helped spark the offense of a team which averaged better than seven runs per game in the playoffs. His on-base percentage of .600 during the tournament included a .500 batting average (6-for-12), a walk and twice reaching via hit batsman. Miranda was 3-for-4 in the stolen base department and scored a team-leading six runs during the championship run. Three times during the tournament the Fords' lead-off batter opened an inning by reaching safely and eventually coming around to score a run. Defensively, he registered five put-outs, perhaps none bigger than a 9th-inning, over-the-shoulder catch near the fence in Haverford's 3-2 win in the opening game of the Centennial playoffs.

Bergjans hurled a complete-game victory in the Fords' tournament opener over Washington. He didn't issue a walk in his nine innings of work and fanned seven while surrendering only one earned run off of five Washington College hits. The Shoremen batted just .167 in their 3-2 loss to Bergjans and Haverford.

The Fords punched their ticket into the NCAA tournament by acquiring the Centennial's automatic bid into the national playoff. Haverford will travel to one of eight double-elimination regional tournaments that begin on May 16. The eight regional winners advance to the 2012 NCAA Division III World Series on May 25-29 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis.
