LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Mid-Atlantic Regional of the 2012 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship has some heavy hitting conference tournament champions but also includes a few surprises.

Of the eight teams heading to FirstEnergy Field -- home to the Philadelphia Phillies' Lakewood Blueclaws farm team -- five, including Haverford College, were crowned postseason playoff champions in their respective conference tournaments.  Adding some spice to the regional, however, is the fact that only three of the eight finished the regular season in first place.

Here's a quick look at how the teams made their way to Lakewood:

  • No. 1 seed Keystone College, ranked No. 3 in the nation
    • Finished the regular season with a 17-1 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) record to earn the top seed heading into the conference playoffs
    • Defeated Neumann University, another Mid-Atlantic regional squad, in the CSAC championship game to improved its season record to 35-6
  • No. 2 seed Kean University, ranked No. 11 in the nation
    • Finished second in the regular season standing of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 13-5 record
    • Captured its third straight NJAC tournament title downing Ramapo in the tournament championship game, closing with a 33-10 mark
  • No. 3 Alvernia University
    • Finished the regular season in the top spot of the Commonwealth Conference of the Middle Atlantic Conference with a 16-2 mark
    • Lost to Messiah in the Commonwealth tournament championship game to finish with a 30-12 overall record
  • No. 4 Ramapo College of New Jersey
    • Finished fifth in the regular-season NJAC standings with a record of 10-8
    • Lost to Kean in the NJAC tournament championship game, ending the schedule with a 31-13 mark
  • No. 5 Neumann University
    • Posted a 12-6 mark to finish second in the CSAC regular season
    • A loss to Keystone in the CSAC tournament finale left the Knights with a 30-13 record
  • No. 6 Haverford College
    • Finished second in the Centennial Conference regular season with a 12-6 record
    • Captured its first Centennial title with an undefeated run through the league's postseason tournament
  • No. 7 Drew University
    • Tied for fourth place in the Landmark Conference regular season with a 9-9 mark
    • Upset top seed Moravian to win the postseason conference tournament
  • No. 8 Daniel Webster College
    • Finished the regular season in first place with a 13-5 mark to earn the right to host the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) tournament
    • Downed Newberry to win the NECC tournament

The Mid-Atlantic regional gets underway Wednesday with Ramapo and Neumann squaring off at 10 a.m. Keystone and Daniel Webster follow at 1:15 p.m. with Alvernia and Haverford playing the day's third game at 4:30 p.m. Kean plays Drew in the nightcap, at 7:45 p.m., of the opening day.
