12th-inning outburst allows Fords to earn split at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Pa. – A two-RBI double from George Hatamiya scored Nick Miranda and Casey Fox to break an extra-inning tie and help lead 23rd-ranked Haverford College to a 7-4 victory over host McDaniel College in Game 2 of a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Green Terror used an eighth-inning run in the day's opener to defeat the visiting Fords by a 3-2 count.

Reliever Patrick Falkoff earned redemption in the nightcap for Haverford (20-5, 5-4 CC) by picking up the win after three innings on the hill. Falkoff had surrendered the late run in Game 1 which allowed McDaniel (16-11, 5-4) to escape with the one-run victory.

The Fords looked to be picking up the doubleheader split heading into the bottom of the ninth inning with a 3-2 lead in Game 2, but an unearned run off Clay Bloszies, who came on in relief of starter Kyle Waney to start the seventh, sent the game to extra innings.

Each team left a runner stranded at third in the bonus frames, McDaniel in the bottom of the 10th and the Fords in the top of the 11, before Haveford broke through in the top of the 12th.

A one-out error on a grounder to third allowed Miranda to reach base safely. Fox singled to right field off Green Terror reliever Andrew Monger, pushing Miranda to third and putting the potential winning run only 90 feet away.

Monger intentionally walked Alex Hudak, who was already 3-for-5 with an RBI in the game, to load the bases and set the table for Hatamiya who lashed a double into left allowing Miranda and Fox to race their way around the bases and give the Fords a two-run advantage.

Nick Ott's ground out to the shortstop was deep enough for Hudak, who had moved to third on Hatamiya's double, to scored and then Zach Taylor followed with a single to center which brought in Hatamiya as the inning's fourth run.

Falkoff surrendered a two-out single followed by an RBI double from Patrick Christopher in the bottom of the 12th, but Christopher was out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple to end the game.

Waney through six innings for Haverford giving up two runs on only two hits and Bloszies surrendered one earned and one unearned run off two hits in his three innings. Falkoff (2-2) earned the win after giving up just that lone 12th-inning run.

In the opener (box score), Haverford pushed a run across in the top of the second to take the lead on Mike Tentilucci's sacrifice fly, then added a second run in the next inning when Hudak singled home Fox who had tripled to right.

McDaniel used three consecutive singles off Haverford starter Tommy Bergjans to halve the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then knotted the game at 2-2 in the sixth after a pair of walks and consecutive fielder's choice plays.

The eventual winning run for McDaniel came in the eighth off Falkoff who walked the lead-off batter, Calvin Benevento, who then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, then to third on a fly-out to right field, and finally all the to home on an RBI single from Jonathan McKinney.

Miranda singled with one out in the top of the ninth but wasn't able to advance.

Bergjans threw seven innings for the Fords giving up two runs off six Green Terror hits and three walks. He fanned six before giving way to Falkoff in the eighth. McDaniel starter James Chionello went the distance to earn the complete-game victory giving up two runs, one was unearned, off 11 Haverford hits.

The Fords welcome Muhlenberg College to Kannerstein Field on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. for a conference game that was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon but was rained out.
