Spring trip closes with win over Fredonia St.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Haverford College's baseball team finished off its spring break trip with a 4-3 non-conference win over the Fredonia State Blue Devils on Saturday morning at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. Starting pitcher Tommy Bergjans picked up his second win of the season for the Fords with Patrick Falkoff earning the save.

Haverford closes out its Florida venture with a 5-4 record. Fredonia falls to 2-2 with Saturday's loss.

Bergjans (2-0) threw four innings for Haverford, surrendering only an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. The program record-holder for single-game strikeouts (18) was on target Saturday as he fanned eight while walking two and allowing four hits during his short outing.

Zach Taylor took over for Bergjans through the middle innings. Taylor also had a solid morning on the mound as he struck out two without servicing a walk in 3 1/3 innings. Fredonia scored a pair of unearned runs against Taylor but those were the only blemishes to his day.

Falkoff put out a fire in the bottom of the eighth, recording the final out on a strikeout with the tying run in scoring position. He completed the save opportunity in the bottom of the ninth as the Fords' defense registered a double-play to end the game.

A run in the top of the first pushed Haverford in front but Fredonia's unearned tally in the bottom of the frame knotted up the score. The Fords pushed a go-ahead run across in the top of the fourth then added another in the fifth and then the sixth for a 4-1 advantage.

Fredonia picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth then pulled within one in the bottom of the eighth with another unearned marker before Falkoff shut the door.

Justin Coulter had a double in a 2-for-4 day at the plate for Haverford. Nick Miranda and Casey Fox each scored two runs in the win with Fox adding in a pair of stolen bases. William Bannard's 1-for-3 outing included three steals.

Haverford returns to Philadelphia Saturday then opens Kannerstein Field's home slate with a game Tuesday against visiting Immaculata University.
