LANCASTER, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team punched its ticket to the 2014 Centennial Conference Tournament with a 7-0 win over host Franklin & Marshall College on Friday afternoon in a conference game that was shortened due to rain.

Haverford's win, complemented by a tie between Muhlenberg College and Dickinson College, secured a postseason berth for the Fords.

Haverford (17-16, 10-6 CC) scored three runs in the fourth inning and added two more in both the sixth and seventh frames before the game was called due to rain prior to the start of the eighth.

The Fords received another shutdown performance from starting pitcher Tommy Bergjans. Bergjans (7-1) pitched the entire seven innings and only allowed two hits while striking out nine Diplomat batters.

After the game went scoreless through the first three innings, Haverford broke through with a three-run fourth. After walks put Jared Deveau and Justin Coulter on base, Thomas Vollaro reached on an error and Zach Taylor followed by scorching a single down the left field line that scored both Deveau and Coulter. Nick Miranda came up next and knocked in Taylor with an RBI single to left field. Miranda went 2-for-4 in the game and increased his Centennial-leading batting average to .388.

Taylor batted in another run with an RBI double in the top of the sixth and Coulter and Vollaro each plated runs in the top of the seventh to increase the Fords' lead to 7-0.

After a Franklin & Marshall (13-22, 5-11) leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh, Bergjans worked through the rain to get out of the inning. The rain continued and forced play to be stopped, which gave Haverford the early victory.

Haverford closes out its Centennial schedule by hosting top-seeded Gettysburg College on Saturday, April 26. The Fords and Bullets will start their doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. Gettysburg has already clinched the top spot in the conference tournament, but Haverford is playing for home-field advantage in the first round on Thursday, May 1.
