Season Review: Memorable season for baseball results in conference title and NCAA berth

Season Review: Memorable season for baseball results in conference title and NCAA berth

2014 Season Review

Signature Win: In another championship season for Haverford there were multiple signature wins, but there is no better place to start than the Game 7, 12-inning, walk-off victory that clinched the Fords' second conference title in the past three years. Second-Team All-Region pitcher Tommy Bergjans pitched six scoreless innings in relief in Game 7 and senior Justin Coulter's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted the Fords to a 2-1 win over No. 21 Gettysburg. Prior to the Game 7 win, Haverford won three straight elimination games, including a walk-off thriller against Johns Hopkins University. Another signature game was the 17-16 victory over Dickinson College in a 16-inning game that lasted over five and a half hours. The Fords totaled 71 team at-bats, a new conference record in the game and won on a single from right fielder George Hatamiya that scored Nick Miranda from second base. On April 13, in the second matchup of the season against Dickinson, Bergjans struck out 12 batters and broke the program record for career strikeouts. The Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year finished the year with 96 strikeouts, a new school record, and fanned a season-high 13 batters in a 3-1 win in the first round of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament.

Notes: Tommy Bergjans was named the Centennial's pitcher of the year for a second consecutive season and was also one of only two unanimous first-team all-conference selections ... Bergjans set the school record for career strikeouts (263), career wins (22), most wins in a season (9) and most single-season strikeouts (96) ... Bergjans' 1.08 ERA was the ninth lowest in Division III this year ... Shortstop William Bannard led the league with 26 stolen bases while teammate Nick Miranda was second in the Centennial with his 20 swipes on the year ... As a team, the Fords were the only program in the conference to steal more than 100 bases and led the Centennial in stolen bases for the sixth time in the past seven years ... Senior Justin Coulter belted four home runs in his final campaign at Haverford and tied for second in the league in long balls ... Nick Miranda led the team with a .355 batting average and tied a Haverford record with five hits in a win over Ursinus on April 16 ... Closer Patrick Falkoff set a new program mark with 19 appearances in 2014 and tied a school record with seven saves ... Nick Ott and Miranda tied for the team lead with 24 RBIs.

Looking Ahead: Tommy Bergjans, entering his senior year, will lead the starting rotation and will only increase his lead in many of his school records. Senior-to-be Casey Fox will play an integral role on the success of the team in 2015 as he posted a 3.68 ERA in eight starts on the mound and also batted .232, with two homeruns and 10 RBIs from the plate. The continued development of starting pitchers Clay Bloszies (1-1 4.85 ERA), Max Gerard (3-2 5.59 ERA) and John Miraglia (1-3 8.89 ERA) will help to round out the pitching unit.

At the plate, recent graduates Miranda, Bannard, and Coulter will be missed, but returners Nick Ott, Thomas Vollaro, Sam Kane, Zach Taylor, Marley Randazzo, and Mike Tentilucci have plenty of experience under their belts. Taylor finished third on the team in 2014 with a .320 batting average and led the squad with a .547 slugging percentage. Randazzo was third on the team with 13 stolen bases and Ott's power and catching abilities will hopefully provide some support for the starting pitchers. Rising sophomore Jared Deveau only started in 22 games as a rookie, but delivered many clutch hits in the postseason and finished the year with 11 RBIs, three doubles and a homerun.
