ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Muhlenberg College Mules came back to defeat the Haverford College baseball team 8-4 in a rain-shortened six inning contest at Cedarcreek Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Fords jumped all over the Mules in the first inning with four runs. Freshman Matt Goss led off the game with a walk. The next hitter, sophomore Ben Verducci, was hit by a pitch and then senior Casey Fox had an infield single to load the bases. Sophomore cleanup hitter Spencer Sohmer kept the offense moving with a two-run double to center. Freshman Mike Schmandt followed with a single up the middle to score Sohmer and Fox, putting Haverford up 4-0.

After tacking on an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, the Mules touched home three times in the second. The first two Mules in the frame reached base and then scored on a two-run triple by Michael Giordano. Giordano came home a batter later on a fielding error to tie the Centennial Conference contest at four.

A Danny Usewick RBI groundout gave Muhlenberg a 5-4 advantage in the third inning. One hitter later, Giordano laced an RBI single down the left field line to make it 6-4. Giordano scored his second run of the contest on a wild pitch later in the frame. Kurt Johnson wrapped up the scoring with a home run in the fifth.

Junior George Hatamiya and Sohmer paced the Fords' offense with two hits each. Giordano and Johnson also had two hits for the Mules in the win.

Head coach Dave Beccaria's team fell to 5-14 overall and 1-6 in the Centennial Conference while Muhlenberg improved to 8-11 this season and 3-4 in conference play. The Fords have a quick turnaround as they travel to Alvernia for a non-conference tilt tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
