HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team's 2015 season will continue on Thursday as it takes on the No. 1 seeded Johns Hopkins Blue Jays at McDaniel College in the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs. The Fords will look for its third conference crown in four years.

In a wild final weekend of the regular season, Haverford swept Gettysburg on the road with an 18-3 win in game one and come-from-behind 6-4 victory in game two. In other conference action, Dickinson swept Washington College which helped propel the Fords to an eighth straight conference playoff bid.

The Fords nabbed their first conference victory of the season against Johns Hopkins behind stellar performances from seniors Tommy Bergjans and Casey Fox in game one of a doubleheader at Kannerstein Field in late March. Bergjans allowed four hits and walked two batters to pick up his second win of the season. His 15 strikeouts were tied for the second most in program history and mark the 13th time in his career in which he has recorded at least 10 strikeouts in a game. Fox hit a home run and had three RBI in the contest. The Blue Jays picked up a split with an 11th inning victory in game two.

Haverford began the season with a 4-5 spring break trip down in Fort Myers, Fla. including three straight wins to end the trip. It was an uneven start to the conference portion of the schedule as the Fords fell to 1-6 before a doubleheader sweep at McDaniel changed the momentum. The baseball team rallied to win nine of its final 12 games and got into the conference playoffs as the No. 4 seed.

Freshman Mike Schmandt finished the regular season with the top batting average (.382) on the team and tied for the team high in RBI (21). Schmandt also led the team in slugging percentage (.618) and is currently on an eight-game hitting streak. Sophomore Ben Verducci also had a banner season, hitting .376 with a team-best 35 hits. Sophomore Yannick Villanueva, freshman Spencer Sohmer and junior Zach Taylor also hit over .300 for the Fords.

On the mound, Bergjans led the pitching staff as he tallied five wins, struck 101 batters and allowed just four earned runs in 60 2/3 innings of work. He became the Centennial Conference's all-time leader in strikeouts and the first Haverford pitcher in program history to strike out over 100 batters in a single season. Freshman Justin Herring made seven starts for the team, posting a 3.55 ERA in 38 innings, striking out 28. Fox has allowed three earned runs or less in last four starts including a complete game victory over Muhlenberg (Apr. 13).

Johns Hopkins finished the regular season at 23-9-1 overall and 13-4-1 in the conference. Craig Hoelzer leads the conference in batting average (.430), RBI (41) while ranking third in hits (55) and slugging percentage (.586). Conor Reynolds has the best on-base percentage (.500) in the conference, is second in average (.411), fourth in hits and tied for fourth in stolen bases (17). Jacob Enterlin is the top pitcher for the Blue Jays, boasting a 5-2 mark with a 1.51 ERA in nine appearances.

This playoff berth is the 10th time that the Fords has reached the Centennial Conference tournament in head coach Dave Beccaria's tenure. The Fords won the conference tournament last season by winning four straight elimination games highlighted by Justin Coulter's '14 walk-off single in the 12th inning in the final game vs. Gettysburg. Haverford also won its second NCAA Tournament game in three seasons with a 3-1 win over the Mid-Atlantic Regional top seed Moravian College.

The Centennial Conference playoffs are a double-elimination tournament. The winner of this contest will take on the winner of No. 2 Franklin and Marshall and No. 3 McDaniel. For a complete schedule of the tournament or for any schedule changes, check out Centennial Conference's website.
